Floor pan and tub rust repair

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A weekend per side; a new tub is a full strip-downCOST Key Parts half floor pan about $242; Omix 1955–69 front pan assembly about $1,350

Symptoms

Soft or holed floors, rot along the rockers, rear corners and under the roll bar, and rusty body mounts. Hagerty says floors usually go around the chassis mounts.

The fix, step by step

  1. Cut back to clean metal, then fit, clamp and weld in the replacement pan.
  2. Jeep-CJ.com warns that patches welded over rust just become rust, so remove all of it.
  3. Replace the body-mount bushings while the floor is open, then seam-seal and paint underneath.
  4. If the tub is too far gone, Omix and others sell complete steel tubs for 1976–83 CJ-5s.
