Springs and shocks

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hours per corner (estimate)COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

A thump over bumps (a cracked coil), sagging ride height, a wallowing or bouncy ride, oily shock bodies. Corrugated roads kill shocks: see the Canning Stock Route sidebar.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the chassis on stands, take the axle's weight on a jack, remove the shock and sway-bar link, and lower the axle carefully until the spring can be lifted out, without overextending the brake hoses and locker lines.
  2. Fit springs in matched pairs using the correct Mercedes colour code for your wheelbase and load, then refit the shocks and torque everything at ride height.

  • jack and stands
  • spring compressor if required
