Transfer case output seals

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 3 hours (estimate)COST ≈$45 per outer seal (Expedition Imports)

Symptoms

Oil dripping from the transfer case flanges or slung around the propshaft ends, and a low transfer case oil level.

The fix, step by step

  1. The VG 080 transfer case has three output flanges, each with an inner and an outer seal.
  2. Unbolt the propshaft, hold the flange and remove the nut, pull the flange, then replace both seals.
  3. Inspect the flange's sealing surface for a groove.
  4. Refill, and change the transfer case and axle oils while you're at it, because Classic & Sports Car recommends asking for their service history.
