Springs and shocks

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hours per corner (estimate)COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

A thump over bumps (a broken coil), a truck sitting low or leaning, a wallowing or bouncy ride, oily shock bodies. Classic & Sports Car lists broken coil springs and leaking dampers among the things to look for.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the chassis on stands, take the axle's weight on a jack, then remove the shock and the sway-bar link.
  2. Lower the axle carefully until you can lift the spring out, without stretching the brake hoses and locker lines.
  3. Fit springs in matched pairs using the correct Mercedes colour code for your wheelbase and load.
  4. Then refit the shocks and torque everything at ride height.

  • spring compressor if required
