Pinion & transfer-case seal leaks

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME Half a day per sealCOST $500–1,200 (transfer-case output seal, au7o)

Symptoms

Oil drips at the front of either differential or at the transfer-case outputs; oil spray on the driveshafts.

The fix, step by step

  1. First make sure the axle breather tube isn't kinked or blocked, because pressure pushes oil past seals.
  2. Pinion seals need care: an MBWorld member notes the pinion bearing preload is set by a crush sleeve, so mark and measure before removing the nut.
  3. For transfer-case output seals, refill with Mercedes-approved fluid and check the flanges for wear.
