7G-TRONIC fluid & filter service

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME 2–3 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Harsh or delayed shifts, flare between gears, or just no service record. FCP Euro notes that the 722.9's most common failures are electronic.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drain the pan and the torque converter, replace the filter and pan gasket, refill with MB 236.15 ATF and set the level at the specified fluid temperature with a scan tool.
  2. AMSOIL lists the 722.9 total fill as 9.5 qt, and a drain-and-fill replaces only part of it.
  3. If shifts are erratic, have a scan tool read the gearbox fault codes before replacing parts.
