Camshaft-adjuster magnets leaking oil

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME 1–2 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil inside the four camshaft-adjuster magnet connectors at the front of the heads. Possible cam-timing codes. On neglected engines, oil wicks along the harness toward the engine computer.

The fix, step by step

  1. Replace all four magnets.
  2. Fit sacrificial wiring pigtails so any future leak stops at a cheap connector.
  3. Clean the harness plugs with electronic cleaner and check the far end of the harness for oil.
  4. FCP Euro's kit is built for this job on the M157, M278 and related engines.
