1970–1981No single year stands out: owners and specialists say to buy on condition and history rather than model year.

1981–1998There's no consensus. MotorTrend says 1986–88 trucks ride more firmly; the '1988½' update brought softer springs, a thicker front anti-roll bar and a 0.865 fifth gear (the 1986 brochure lists 0.795), and 1990–95 trucks have throttle-body injection. On Zukiworld, owners split: some prefer the carbureted 1986–89 trucks because a carb is easy to fix in the field, others the fuel-injected 1990–95 trucks, and one prefers pre-1988½ trucks for their all-metal radiators. Condition and the quality of past modifications matter more than the year.

1998–2018BigJimny doesn't name a best year, and it rates both petrol engines as robust: the M13A has a timing chain that doesn't need replacing, while the earlier G13B has a cam belt. The ones to be careful with are the early K9K 700 diesels (2003 to about 2006), which it calls statistically very troublesome, and petrols from about 2005–2008 with the early R72 gearbox, whose bearings can fail (about £700 to fix). Late trucks from about 2014 add low-range traction control. Otherwise, rust decides it.
- 2004European JB53 diesel arrives with Renault's 65 PS K9K 700, whose fuel pump failures can ruin the engineBeware
- 2005Push-button electric transfer case, new interior and the R72 manual gearbox. BigJimny says early R72s (about 2005–2008) are prone to bearing failure; listen for noise in third and fourthBeware
