Discovery 1 years to avoid, and the best years to buy

Every Land Rover Discovery Series I model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.

The short answer

Condition first: Disco 1s rot in the sills, floors and rear chassis, so a solid truck of any year beats a shiny rotten one. After that, the 1994-on facelift with the 300Tdi is the one guides point to; Classic Car Hub calls it the more sensible choice and says it commands a premium over the V8. One LandyZone member's tip is a late ES (1997–98 model year), or a 1998 Anniversary for most of the kit without the leaky sunroofs. US trucks were all V8s.
