Four Wheel Trends says the biggest tire you can generally run on a stock TJ and keep full function is a 31x10.50-15, and that even that size may rub at full flex, which a washer or two on the steering stops usually cures. The Rubicon came from the factory on 31-inch LT245/75R16 Goodyear MT/Rs.

The coil-sprung TJ responds well to a 2–4 inch lift, which clears 33s and gives it more flex. Plan on matching track bars and control arms as you go higher.
A steel front bumper with a winch is cheap insurance on a short-wheelbase rig that wheels alone.
Non-Rubicon TJs on bigger tires need lower gears and lockers, and the Dana 35 rear is usually the first thing to replace.
