Jeep Wrangler LJ Unlimited years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (LJ) model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
2005–06 brought the NSG370 six-speed manual. Those years also need the OPDA checked. The 2005–06 Rubicon Unlimited is the one with front and rear Dana 44s, air lockers and the 4:1 Rock-Trac. A 2004 or non-Rubicon LJ still has the Dana 44 rear and is a better starting point for a build than a Dana 35 TJ.
Jeep Wrangler LJ Unlimited year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 | — | Wrangler Unlimited launches in April 2004 (the 2004½ model): 103.4-inch wheelbase (10 in longer than a TJ), one extra frame crossmember, standard Dana 44 rear with 3.73 gears, NV231 transfer case and 3,500 lb towing |
| 2005 | — | Unlimited Rubicon arrives with front and rear locking Dana 44s, the Rock-Trac NV241OR and 245/75R16 MT/Rs; NSG370 six-speed replaces the five-speed manual |
| 2005 | — | Sahara Edition Unlimited Rubicon: 1,000 numbered trucks, all Light Khaki |
| 2006 | — | Final year; production ends in July 2006 and the four-door JK Unlimited takes over for 2007 |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
What a Jeep Wrangler LJ Unlimited costs (October 2026)
The LJ sells for more than a comparable TJ: a one-generation long-wheelbase body plus the Rubicon spec make clean ones scarce, and good Unlimited Rubicons are near the top of the TJ market.
| Project / needs work | $10k–16k |
|---|---|
| Driver | $16k–27k |
| Excellent / low-mile Rubicon | $27k–38k |
Based on 55 Unlimited sales on Bring a Trailer from April 2025 to October 2026: median ≈$20,500, middle half ≈$16,000–27,250. Unlimited Rubicons had a median of ≈$25,250, topping out around $37,000–38,000 (a 33k-mile 2005 Rubicon and a Vortec-swapped 2005 Rubicon).
