Jeep Wrangler JK years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Jeep Wrangler JK (2-door) model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
A 2012-on Pentastar. Quadratec calls it a generally strong engine, while Driving Line says the 2007–11 3.8 burns oil, leaks intake gaskets and cracks exhaust manifolds, and has seen some spin bearings by 100,000 miles. Driving Line's daily-driver pick is 2013 or newer; SlashGear rates 2012–13 as the standout years. The year to be wary of is 2007: several first-year recalls, and CarComplaints.com logs more complaints for 2007 and 2008 than for any other Wrangler year. Not everyone agrees on the Pentastar's first years, either: RealTruck lists 2012–14 among its worst, citing engine complaints. So on a 2012–13 ask about the left cylinder head, and on any Pentastar check the oil filter housing.

Jeep Wrangler JK year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 | Beware | JK launch (production from August 2006): 3.8 EGH V6 (202 hp) with a 6-speed manual or 4-speed 42RLE auto; Rubicon has Dana 44s with lockers, 4:1 Rock-Trac and a sway-bar disconnect; the four-door Unlimited is new. First-year trucks drew several recalls (SlashGear), 2007–08 log the most complaints on CarComplaints.com (CarGurus), and Driving Line warns the 3.8 burns oil, leaks intake gaskets and cracks exhaust manifolds |
| 2009 | — | Hill Start Assist standard; Trailer Sway Control available |
| 2010 | — | Easier-folding soft top; Uconnect on MyGig-equipped trucks |
| 2011 | — | Fully redesigned interior with steering-wheel controls, Bluetooth, and available heated seats and leather. Mopar's JK-8 pickup kit for the Unlimited also arrives. |
| 2012 | Sweet spot | 3.6 Pentastar V6 (285 hp, 260 lb-ft) and 5-speed W5A580 automatic replace the 3.8 and the 4-speed. The Pentastar is the engine to have (Quadratec, Driving Line); Driving Line's daily-driver pick is a 2013 or newer |
| 2012–13 | — | Some Pentastars have faulty left cylinder heads (misfire codes); covered by the X56 extension to 10 years/150,000 miles |
| 2013 | — | Second windshield-washer nozzle returns; one-handed rear-seat fold; Moab edition with AEV bumpers. The millionth JK is built in May 2013. |
| 2014 | — | Clear park and turn lamps; optional 6.5 in Uconnect; Rubicon X edition |
| 2015 | — | Willys Wheeler and Rubicon Hard Rock join the range; Torx tool kit for doors and windshield standard; Alpine audio option |
| 2018 | — | Final year, sold alongside the new JL with 'Wrangler JK' fender decals; Golden Eagle edition. Production ends April 27, 2018. |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
What a Jeep Wrangler JK costs (October 2026)
JKs are firmly in used-truck territory. Low miles, Rubicon hardware and a manual gearbox earn the premiums, and tidy late Pentastar trucks outsell early 3.8s.
| Project / high-mile | $6k–12k |
|---|---|
| Driver | $12k–20k |
| Excellent / low-mile Rubicon | $20k–33k |
Based on 70 two-door JK sales on Bring a Trailer in 2025–26: median about $15.8k, top sale $32,750 for a one-owner, 5k-mile 2015 Rubicon 6-speed.
