Square Body Suburban 4x4 years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Chevrolet/GMC Suburban (1973–1991 square body) model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
1987 to 1991. For 1987 all the gasoline engines switched to throttle-body injection, and the 5.7-liter V8 was rated at 210 hp and 300 lb-ft in 10-series trucks. The diesel already had mechanical injection.

| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 1973 | — | Rounded Line Suburban launches with four side doors, standard double rear doors and an optional tailgate with a wind-down window. K10/K20 4x4s use the NP205 or the full-time NP203. 307 V8 offered this year only |
| 1975 | — | 400 V8 added for K-series trucks. Trims become Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale and Silverado (GMC: Sierra Classic replaces Super Custom) |
| 1978 | — | Front bucket seats offered |
| 1979 | — | Quick-release third-row seat. Last year for the Estate woodgrain package |

| 1982 | — | 6.2 L Detroit Diesel V8 option. Three-quarter-ton trucks switch from 16.5 to 16 in wheels |
| 1987 | Sweet spot | Throttle-body fuel injection on all gasoline engines. C/K renamed R/V (R = 2WD, V = 4x4). Owners on GMSquareBody and CK5 point to the TBI trucks for better mileage, more power and reliability than the carbureted ones |
| 1989 | — | Largest facelift since 1973: flush, mostly black grille and a new steering wheel |
| 1990 | — | Power mirrors; rear-wheel ABS optional |
| 1991 | — | Final year. Wikipedia says the 4L80-E replaced the 700R4; check the transmission on any given truck |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
