Replace the starter motor

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST A starter and an hour or two

Symptoms

Clicking or slow cranking with a good battery. Starters are the most common complaint in ProductReview's NM/NP owner reviews; one owner says they 'started to go like hot cakes'.

The fix, step by step

  1. Charge and load-test the battery and clean the terminals and earth strap first.
  2. Then disconnect the battery, remove the skid plate if fitted, unplug the solenoid lead and main cable, and unbolt the starter.
  3. Fit the new unit, torque the bolts, reconnect and test.
