Symptoms
A hard pedal or slow brake assist on the first stop after the truck has been parked, an ABS-pump noise, or a warning lamp or buzzer. The US, Australian and Hong Kong recalls say a faulty accumulator can leak its nitrogen charge. A 2002 Limited owner on Expedition Portal had intermittent ABS tones, then a total loss of boost and a seized pump motor that drained the battery.
The fix, step by step
- Run the VIN for NHTSA 01V254001 (US 2001–02) or Australia's REC-003136 and have any open accumulator recall done first.
- JDMBUYSELL relays Mitsubishi's warning that spilled brake fluid can get into the pump motor: wipe up spills and never wash fluid away with water.
- A warning lamp, buzzer or weak assist needs Mitsubishi's tester to diagnose.
- The Expedition Portal owner's dealer blamed debris in the fluid, and owners there recommend regular brake-fluid flushes as these trucks age.
