DIY repair · Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero (Second Generation)

Reset or upgrade the front torsion bars

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hour to adjust; half a day to replace the barsCOST Free to adjust; uprated bars and rear coils as a kit

Symptoms

The nose sits low. One ExplorOz contributor says many high-mileage Pajeros 'almost look like they're sitting on the front bump stops.' A heavy steel bull bar makes it worse.

The fix, step by step

  1. If the bars aren't badly sagged, wind the adjusters up evenly to restore ride height.
  2. Measure both sides and get an alignment.
  3. Be aware that winding them up adds preload and puts more twist on tired bars.
  4. If the bars have sagged a lot, or you run a bar and winch, fit uprated torsion bars and match them with stiffer rear coils so the front and rear balance.
  5. One Australian owner reported 65 mm of lift and a firm ride from a TJM kit.
