Cure a flashing 4WD light (front axle engagement)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hours to diagnose and fixCOST Usually a vacuum solenoid or hose; parts plus your time

Symptoms

The Super Select lights keep flashing after you select 4H, or the front axle never engages. Owners say the system 'sometimes plays up if not used very much'.

The fix, step by step

  1. In 2H and 4H a dog clutch on the front differential disconnects one front axle shaft, and Super Select uses it to engage the front axle.
  2. A light that keeps flashing means the front axle hasn't engaged.
  3. Start with the cheap parts: inspect every vacuum hose between the engine, the solenoid valves and the front-diff actuator for cracks or loose ends, then test each solenoid.
  4. The Montero Ventures video shows a flashing-light fault cured by replacing a vacuum solenoid valve.
  5. Afterwards, cycle through 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc on loose ground, and use 4WD regularly so the system doesn't seize from disuse.
