Replace the front brake hoses

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST A pair of hoses and a bottle of DOT 3

Symptoms

Cracked, chafed or weeping front hoses. NHTSA recall 96V143 says the wheel-side front hoses on 1992–94 Monteros could crack at full steering lock and full suspension travel. Recall 98V220 covers 1997–98 front brake lines chafing through at the inner-fender pass-through.

The fix, step by step

  1. Check whether the recalls were done, then inspect the hoses at full lock with the suspension drooped.
  2. Clamp the hose or fit a pedal holder to limit fluid loss, swap the hose with new sealing washers, and check that it doesn't touch anything at either lock or at full droop.
  3. Bleed the brakes with DOT 3, the fluid AMSOIL's lookup lists for these trucks.
