Symptoms
Front drive drops out when you rock a stuck truck back and forth. CarsGuide notes this is a known trait of the auto hubs.
The fix, step by step
- With the axle on stands, remove the six Allen bolts holding each auto hub (as in the bearing service above), pull the hub assembly and fit the manual hub kit according to its instructions.
- Check the bearing preload while you're there.
- Run both hubs in LOCK whenever you're in 4WD.
