Fit a rear locker

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A full day (setup is critical)COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Not a fault. The rear LSD on many GUs isn't enough on rocky climbs and cross-axle ruts.

The fix, step by step

  1. First find out which rear diff you have.
  2. Harrop's GU ELocker and the Detroit H233 unit suit the H233B only, and the GU used both H233B and H260 rear centres.
  3. Remove the axles and carrier, swap the ring gear onto the locker, and fit new carrier bearings.
  4. Set preload and backlash and check the tooth pattern before refilling.
  5. Air lockers need a compressor and air line, and electric lockers need wiring to a dash switch.
  6. Shops usually do this, because a bad setup ruins the ring and pinion.
