Symptoms
Rumble or growl that changes with speed, play at the wheel, or bearing grease slung onto the brake parts. It's also due whenever you rebuild the swivels.
The fix, step by step
- Following a NissanPatrol.com.au how-to: support the front on stands and remove the wheel.
- Take off the free-wheeling hub, the CV circlip, the hub internals and the 'egg ring'.
- Unbolt the caliper and rest it on the swivel.
- Flatten the locking plate, undo the outer 54 mm bearing nut, remove the plate and the second 54 mm nut, then slide the hub and rotor off.
- Punch out the pressed-in races, remove the rear seal and bearings, then fit the new races, bearings and seal.
- Adjust bearing preload to the manual before locking the nuts.
- Don't rest the axle on the new seal during reassembly.

- brake cleaner. Some owners fit the later GU-style hub nut system in place of the GQ lock nut.
