Repair a chip before the windshield cracks

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 30 minutes for a chip · replacement is a glass-shop jobCOST One IH8MUD member paid $50 for a chip repair. Early replacement quotes on IH8MUD ran about $1,600–1,800 with dealer glass.

Symptoms

Chips from road debris that grow into long cracks, often from the bottom center of the glass. More than 60 NHTSA complaints across the 2007–2014 model years describe cracked FJ windshields, some after a pothole or cold weather and some from owners on their third or fourth windshield.

The fix, step by step

  1. The nearly upright glass takes the full force of every rock, so fix chips while they're small.
  2. A resin repair kept one IH8MUD member's small crack from spreading.
  3. If it has to be replaced, have the shop order a new top molding too.
  4. An IH8MUD member said it often gets ruined coming off; his dealer molding was about $278.
  5. Another member listed PPG FW02652 as the replacement glass.
  6. After a replacement, check for leaks at the top molding and A-pillars in the first rain or car wash.
