Chop the front body mounts for bigger tires

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day, with weldingCOST $34.95 for Metal Tech's plates, plus welding

Symptoms

Oversize or wide tires rubbing at full lock or under compression, usually the inside of the tire hitting the front body mount.

The fix, step by step

  1. IH8MUD owners say rubbing on FJs is as much about tire width and wheel backspacing as diameter, and that the front body mount is the usual contact point at full lock.
  2. The fix is to cut the mount back and weld a cap over the opening.
  3. Metal Tech's laser-cut 3/16-inch plates show what to cut and come with instructions a welding shop can follow.
  4. Also remove or heat and reshape the plastic mud flap, which one owner found was the only thing his 285/70R17s touched on stock suspension.

Tools & part numbers

  • Cutoff wheel or plasma
  • welder
  • heat gun for the mud flap
