Symptoms
Gear oil soaking the rear drum brake, cracked or contaminated shoes, and grabby rear brakes at low speed.
The fix, step by step
- Remove the diff cover, take out the pinion-shaft spacer (center shaft) and the C-clips, and slide the axle shafts out.
- Pull the old bearing and seal with a slide hammer or puller, seat the new ones with the correct driver, check the shaft for grooving, then refit.
- Because the shoes are oil-soaked, replace them along with the drum hardware and the wheel cylinder if it's weeping.
- Do both sides.
- The bearings on this axle run in gear oil, so there is nothing to repack.
