Power-steering leak? Check the reservoir first

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST Seals from a parts store

Symptoms

Power-steering fluid weeping around the top of the system. It's often blamed on hoses or the pump, but Unsealed 4X4 says the usual culprit is the rubber seals inside the reservoir.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the reservoir, carefully pry open the crimped lip, replace the internal rubber seals and re-crimp the top.
  2. Refill with Toyota-spec fluid and bleed by turning lock to lock with the engine running.
  3. Only replace hoses or rebuild the pump if the leak comes back.
