Symptoms
4WD light stays off, the front axle won't drive in 4H, or it engages and drops out with a clunk under load at speed.
The fix, step by step
- The 4WD Mechanix forum's diagnosis runs in order.
- First, bleed-down test the shift motor and lines with a hand vacuum pump and gauge, and confirm the motor holds vacuum.
- Check that the engage and disengage ports at the transfer case switch and motor get steady vacuum (about 17 in.
- Hg in that thread).
- Then test the supply side: reserve tank, check valve, hoses and manifold fittings.
- Tee a gauge into the engage line and road test, watching for drops under load.
- If vacuum holds, pull the shift motor and inspect the shift fork, clutch hub and axle shafts.
- The common permanent fix is a cable-operated disconnect, such as the JKS Posi-Lok.
