Chase down front-end shimmy and worn steering

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ An afternoon to inspect; parts swaps varyCOST Parts plus alignment

Symptoms

A violent side-to-side shake after a bump at around 45 mph, wandering, or a clunk when you turn the wheel with the engine off.

The fix, step by step

  1. Quadratec's death-wobble guide applies to any solid front axle.
  2. Disconnect the steering stabilizer so it can't hide anything.
  3. Have a helper rock the wheel a quarter turn each way while you watch the track bar for movement at both ends.
  4. Jack up the front and check tie-rod ends for play, ball joints by prying the tire, and wheel bearings by rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock.
  5. Inspect control points and bushings.
  6. Tighten everything to spec, replace what moves, check tire balance and pressure, then get an alignment from a 4x4-savvy shop.
  7. A stronger stabilizer only masks the problem.
