Symptoms
Loss of power assist or a 'Service Power Steering' message. AARP reports that the June 2026 recall covers about 1,077,000 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators whose electro-hydraulic pump connection can overheat and start a fire, even when parked. Owners were told to park outside until it's fixed, and at least 51 fires were linked to the fault.
The fix, step by step
- Check the VIN on nhtsa.gov first.
- If the recall applies, the dealer inspects and repairs or replaces parts free of charge, so don't DIY around it.
- For an out-of-warranty pump failure on a truck that isn't covered: disconnect the battery, drain the reservoir, unplug the pump's electrical connector and pressure/return lines, unbolt the pump, fit the new one, then refill with the Mopar electric steering pump fluid listed in the manual and bleed by turning lock to lock with the engine running.
