Symptoms
Front-end shimmy or full death wobble after a bump at 45–65 mph, with the steering wheel shaking side to side.
The fix, step by step
- On 2018–2019 trucks, check the history first.
- In August 2019 FCA began offering a stronger steering damper at no charge.
- FCA said its engineers found air could get into the original damper in cold weather, when the oil thickens, so it lost damping.
- Its Customer Satisfaction Notification V41 covered about 192,000 2018–2019 JLs.
- Then inspect the front end the same way as on any solid-axle Jeep: have a helper rock the wheel while you watch both ends of the track bar, then check the tie-rod and drag-link ends, ball joints, control-arm bushings and wheel bearings.
- Replace worn parts, torque everything at ride height, and get an alignment.
- A damper on its own masks wobble; it doesn't cure it.
