Rebuild the Motorcraft 2150 or convert to throttle-body injection

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5 (rebuild) · 3 / 5 (TBI)TIME ≈ An afternoon (rebuild) · A weekend (TBI)COST TBI conversion about $2,000 in parts plus up to $1,000 labor (Hagerty)

Symptoms

Hesitation, stumbling or stalling cold or hot, hard hot starts, fuel smell, poor idle. Hagerty's specialist blames the carburetor for about 40% of owner headaches.

The fix, step by step

  1. Rule out vacuum leaks and ignition faults first: check every vacuum line and the distributor pickup and module.
  2. To rebuild, remove the carb, strip it on a clean bench, replace the base gasket, power valve and internal gaskets from a 2150 kit, set the float and choke pull-off to the kit's specs, and refit on a new base gasket and insulator.
  3. Converting to TBI means a throttle body with its own fuel pump, return line, sensors and harness.
  4. Most owners who keep the truck do it eventually, and it's the core of the Wagonmaster recipe.
