Symptoms
The lever won't go into a mode or won't come out, 4WD won't engage, or a Quadra-Trac truck binds and scrubs in tight turns.
The fix, step by step
- Check the shift linkage first: OffroadXtreme says Selec-Trac linkages often stick, so clean, lube and adjust the linkage and bushings.
- Then drain and refill the case; ExtremeTerrain lists 1.1–1.5 quarts of ATF+4 for the NP231, NV242 and NV249.
- On a Quadra-Trac, make sure all four tires match in size and wear.
- If an NV249 still binds after that, the viscous coupling is the likely suspect.
- Many owners swap a worn-out NP242 for a simpler NP231.
