Symptoms
Hesitation, low fuel pressure, stalling or a crank-no-start, and replacement pumps that keep failing. Fuel-pump complaints to NHTSA cluster on 1995–96 trucks. Several owners were told debris from inside the plastic tank had clogged the pump (ODI 756730, 8001105, 758045).
The fix, step by step
- Confirm low pressure with a gauge before you condemn the pump.
- Run the tank low, support it, disconnect the lines and straps, lower it and pull the pump module.
- Look inside the tank: if the lining is flaking or there's sediment, clean or replace the tank, or the new pump will clog too.
- Several owners went through multiple pumps before the tank was dealt with.
- Fit a new strainer with the pump and replace rusty straps.
- While the tank is down, check that recall 13V-252 (rear-impact fuel tank protection) was done.
