DIY repair · Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ

Free a stuck rear hatch

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

The liftgate won't open from the handle or the remote, or won't latch shut.

The fix, step by step

  1. OffroadXtreme lists a stuck rear hatch as a common ZJ fault, and rust at the bottom of the hatch can stop it opening.
  2. Get it open from inside: remove the interior trim panel and work the latch by hand.
  3. Clean and lube the latch and linkage, replace broken rods or clips, and check the latch bumpers.
  4. NHTSA recalled 1993 trucks because grease made the latch bumpers swell and jam the latch pawl (93V-055).
