DIY repair · Jeep Comanche MJ

Rebush the rear leaf springs and shackles

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a dayCOST Bushings, shackles and shocks

Symptoms

Clunks over bumps, a rear end that steers itself, rusted or seized shackles, or bent lower shock-mount bolts. Comanche Club owners recommend upgrading the rear lower shock mounts.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the frame and take the weight off the springs.
  2. Soak every bolt in penetrant for a few days first.
  3. Unbolt the shackles and front hangers, drop each spring, press out the old bushings and fit new ones (polyurethane needs grease).
  4. Fit new shackles, torque everything at ride height, and replace the shocks while you're there.
