Cure death wobble: track bar and steering

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a dayCOST Parts plus an alignment

Symptoms

Violent front shake after a bump at speed, wandering and clunks. The MJ front end is the XJ's, with the same weak points: the track bar, tie-rod ends, drag link and steering box.

The fix, step by step

  1. With the engine running, have a helper turn the wheel back and forth while you watch the track-bar ends and bracket, the tie-rod and drag-link ends and the steering box for movement.
  2. Replace worn parts (an adjustable track bar re-centers a lifted axle), tighten everything at ride height, and check the unibody around the steering box for cracks.
  3. A steering stabilizer hides wobble; it doesn't cure it.
