Replace the fuel shutoff solenoid

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 30 minutesCOST Parts only (about $70 rebuilt in 2012, per Flash Off-Road)

Symptoms

Occasional hard starts, sputtering and stalling while driving, and an engine that won't restart straight away. This differs from a PMD fault, which usually stalls without sputtering.

The fix, step by step

  1. Disconnect the connector and unscrew the solenoid from the top of the injection pump (1/2-in hex).
  2. Don't lose the coil spring in the bore, and keep dirt out of the pump.
  3. Install the new solenoid, torque it to 200 lb-in per Stanadyne, and reconnect it.
