Oil in the cam-magnet connectors

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hourCOST Cheap if caught early

Symptoms

Oil inside the camshaft-adjuster magnet connectors; on neglected engines oil wicks up the harness toward the engine control unit.

The fix, step by step

  1. Unplug each connector and inspect for oil.
  2. Replace leaking cam magnets and fit Mercedes’ sacrificial adapter pigtails so any future seepage stops short of the main harness.
  3. Clean contaminated connectors with electrical cleaner.
