Front axle seal leak

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME A dayCOST $600–1,500

Symptoms

Gear oil on the inner front wheels, a gear-oil smell, oil on a caliper or rotor, brakes pulling to one side.

The fix, step by step

  1. Replace both front axle seals even if only one is leaking, and check the shafts for scoring.
  2. If oil reached the brakes, replace the pads and resurface or replace the rotors — contaminated pads are a safety issue.
