Diff locks won’t engage

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME An afternoonCOST Diagnosis-dependent

Symptoms

A lock refuses to engage or drops out; indicator lights flash. On W463s the cause is usually actuation — vacuum or wiring — rather than the differential.

The fix, step by step

  1. Work the system from the actuator back: confirm vacuum or signal at each lock, then trace lines and connectors toward the source with a gauge or meter.
  2. Fix the leak, then exercise the locks regularly.

Tools & part numbers

  • Hand vacuum pump with gauge
  • multimeter
  • vacuum tees and line
