Symptoms
A hard brake pedal that needs more effort than usual to stop the truck. The booster's vacuum hose can collapse.
The fix, step by step
- NHTSA recall 17V-817 covers 432 model-year 2017 G 550 and G 550 4×4² trucks.
- The brake-booster vacuum hose may collapse and raise braking effort, and dealers replace the hose as needed for free.
- Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy, and ask for the paperwork if it's been done.
- On a 6,694-lb truck, this is not one to put off.

Rated for a competent home mechanic with a decent tool kit. Confirm torque figures, fluids and procedures against the factory service manual for your VIN, support the truck on stands rather than a jack, and work at your own risk (disclaimer).
