Symptoms
Wipers that slow down or stop when you accelerate uphill, the classic vacuum-wiper failure, or a vacuum-wiper fuel pump blocking a power-steering pump.
The fix, step by step
- Ford switched from vacuum to electric wipers in mid-1969, and on the early trucks the vacuum supply runs through the fuel pump.
- Remove the vacuum motor and its lines, fit the electric motor and bracket on the windshield frame, connect the motor arm to the existing linkage and run the wiper harness to a switch.
- An electric-wiper cover finishes the job.
- Replace the fuel pump with a non-vacuum V8 pump while you're there, which also frees up the spot a power-steering pump needs.
