Symptoms
Fading, pulling or long stops from the original four-wheel drums, especially on bigger tires. 1976–77 trucks already have factory power front discs.
The fix, step by step
- Jack up the front and remove the wheels, locking hubs, drums and the drum-brake spindles.
- Wild Horses' kit fits 1966–early 1971 Dana 30 and 1971–75 Dana 44 axles with six-bolt drum knuckles, and includes disc spindles, caliper brackets, calipers and pads, hub-and-rotor assemblies and new wheel bearings.
- Bolt on the new spindles and brackets, pack and fit the bearings in the new hubs, and set the bearing preload.
- Fit new caliper hoses and a proportioning valve for disc-front, drum-rear brakes, then bleed the system.
- Wild Horses recommends aftermarket locking hubs such as Warn or Mile Marker, and buyers suggest doing the outer axle seals and U-joints and adding a brake booster at the same time.
