Get it inspected before you buy
A used 4x4 can look perfect and still hide a rotten frame, a slipping transfer case or lockers that haven’t worked in years. Here are the three ways to get one checked properly, what to ask for, and the paperwork to run before you hand over a deposit.
Use a specialist in that truck if there’s one within reach. If the truck is far away, send a mobile inspector with our model-specific checklist. Either way, run the VIN for open recalls and theft or salvage records first, and look at it yourself with a few basic tools.
Three ways to get a used 4x4 inspected
A specialist in that truck
A Land Cruiser, G-Wagen or Defender shop knows where these trucks rust, which years have which weak spots, and what a healthy locker or transfer case should feel like. Many will inspect a truck you bring in, and some will inspect auction listings from photos and video. Specialists we know of are listed below.
A mobile inspector
When the truck is in another state, a nationwide service sends a mechanic to the seller and emails you a report with photos. Lemon Squad ↗ covers the whole US, checks the mechanicals, body, underside and OBD-II codes, and offers vintage and classic inspections. Mobile inspectors are generalists, so send them the printable checklist for that exact model.
Look at it with a checklist
Even if a pro inspects it, look yourself: take our model checklist and the tools below, and work through the common problems for that generation. It’s also how you decide whether a truck is worth paying an inspector for.
Run the VIN before you go
- NHTSA recall lookup ↗ FreeShows any open safety recalls. Ask the seller for proof the work was done, or plan a dealer visit.
- NICB VINCheck ↗ FreeThe National Insurance Crime Bureau’s check for vehicles reported stolen, or declared a total loss and not recovered.
- carVertical vehicle history report ↗ PaidAccident, odometer, title and damage-photo records from registries, insurers and repair shops. Cheaper than Carfax, though Carfax has more service records.
History reports only know what was reported. They need a 17-digit VIN, so trucks built before 1981 aren’t covered; for those, the paperwork, the frame and a specialist’s eye matter even more.
What to ask the inspector to check on a boxy 4x4
- Frame and body rust, from the insideFrame rails behind the rear wheels, body mounts, rockers and sills, floor pans and the tailgate. Surface rust is normal; flaking or soft metal isn’t.
- Every 4WD mode, on a loose surfaceEngage 4-high and 4-low, and the center diff lock if it has one. Listen for clunks and check that the dash lights come on and go off.
- Each locker, one at a timeLockers that are rarely used often stop working. Engage each one and check that it locks and unlocks.
- Leaks at the axles, knuckles and transfer caseWet axle seals, weeping front knuckles and a leaking transfer case are common and add up fast.
- Steering and suspension playSteering box, tie-rod ends, ball joints and bushings. Lifted trucks wear these faster.
- Signs of hard off-road useDented skid plates, bent tie rods or rock sliders, scraped diff housings, and crude wiring for lights and accessories.
- The quality of any modificationsBrand-name lift kits, correct driveline angles and re-gearing for big tires. A cheap lift on a nice truck is a cost, not a feature.
- Codes, readiness monitors and fluidsStored and pending codes, monitors that haven’t reset, and the color and level of every fluid.
Each truck also has its own weak spots. Find yours: best years and years to avoid, or open the guide for that generation and go to its Problems page.
What to bring when you look at a used 4x4
Six inexpensive tools that catch most of the problems above before you hand over the money.
- Bluetooth OBD-II scannerReads stored and pending codes, and shows the readiness monitors. If several say "not ready", someone may have cleared the codes just before you arrived.Amazon ↗
- Paint thickness gaugeThick readings on one panel mean body filler or a respray, which usually means an accident or rust repair the seller hasn’t mentioned.Amazon ↗
- Inspection borescope cameraFits through drain holes into frame rails, rockers and sills, where these trucks rust from the inside out.Amazon ↗
- Bright LED flashlightFor the underside: leaks at the axle seals, transfer case and rear main, and the frame behind the rear wheels.Amazon ↗
- Telescoping inspection mirrorShows the back of the engine, the top of the fuel tank and the inner fenders without crawling under.Amazon ↗
- Compression testerOn a high-mileage or long-parked engine, uneven compression is the cheapest way to spot a tired engine before you pay for it. Diesels need a diesel-rated tester.Amazon ↗
