Jeep Wrangler YJ years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Jeep Wrangler YJ model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
Sources disagree. 4WD Mechanix says 1987–92 YJs used a slave cylinder built into the release bearing and that 1993 brought the external slave and pivot arm used in the TJ. Wikipedia dates the move outside the bellhousing to 1994, and Advance Adapters lists its internal-bearing hose kit for 1987–93. Treat 1993 as either, and look for an external slave on the bellhousing. The internal type means pulling the transmission to replace it.

Jeep Wrangler YJ year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 1987 | — | YJ launches (unveiled February 1986, on sale May 1986) with the 2.5 L four or carbureted 4.2 L six and the NP207 transfer case, used only this year |
| 1988 | — | NP231 transfer case replaces the NP207; Sahara trim debuts; Islander package runs 1988–93 |
| 1989 | — | Aisin AX-15 five-speed replaces the Peugeot BA-10 behind the 4.2 L six |
| 1991 | Sweet spot | Fuel-injected 4.0 L six replaces the carbureted 4.2; Hagerty says the 4.0 sixes are often the most desirable YJs. Renegade Decor Group arrives (built from October 1990) |
| 1992 | — | Brampton plant closes in April and production moves to Toledo; roll cage extended for rear shoulder belts; electronic speedometer |
| 1993 | — | Anti-lock brakes become optional |
| 1994 | Sweet spot | Automatic offered with the four; center high-mounted stop lamp. Manual trucks get an external clutch slave cylinder (Wikipedia; 4WD Mechanix says 1993), which is why SlashGear calls 1994–95 the best YJ years: no pulling the gearbox to replace the slave |
| 1995 | — | Larger Dana 30 U-joints (297x) and 1330 rear pinion joint; Rio Grande package; last YJs (there is no 1996 Wrangler) |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
What a Jeep Wrangler YJ costs (October 2026)
YJs are still the cheap way into a Wrangler, but nicer ones keep climbing. Low miles, the 4.0 six, a five-speed and Sahara, Renegade or Jurassic Park-style specs bring the money.
| Project / needs work | $4k–8k |
|---|---|
| Driver | $8k–17k |
| Excellent / low-mile | $20k–35k |
| Time-capsule outliers | up to ≈$50k |
Based on 71 Bring a Trailer sales from January 2025 to October 2026: median ≈$9,800, middle half ≈$7,300–17,000. Top results seen on BaT include a 460-mile 1995 Sahara ($47,250, February 2025) and, just before that window, a 6k-mile 1995 Sahara ($49,750, September 2024).
