Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited years to avoid, and the best years to buy

Every Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.

The short answer

A 2012-on Pentastar. Quadratec calls it a generally strong engine, while Driving Line says the 2007–11 3.8 burns oil, leaks intake gaskets and cracks exhaust manifolds, and has seen some spin bearings by 100,000 miles. Driving Line's daily-driver pick is 2013 or newer; SlashGear rates 2012–13 as the standout years. The year to be wary of is 2007: several first-year recalls, and CarComplaints.com logs more complaints for 2007 and 2008 than for any other Wrangler year. Not everyone agrees on the Pentastar's first years, either: RealTruck lists 2012–14 among its worst, citing engine complaints. So on a 2012–13 ask about the left cylinder head, and on any Pentastar check the oil filter housing.
