Jeep Grand Wagoneer years to avoid, and the best years to buy

Every Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ) model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.

The short answer

1989–91, if you can. Those years got better rust-proofing (electrocoat primer), base-clear paint, an improved A/C compressor, an overhead console, keyless entry and a rear wiper. The 1991 Final Edition carries a premium. Hagerty's specialist adds that low mileage, under about 100,000, is the safest buy.

1991Sweet spotFinal year of the 1989–91 'best of the breed' run; buyers after the February 27 discontinuation announcement could add a gold 'Final Edition' dash badge, and Hagerty says low-mileage examples are desirable and expensive. Last truck built June 21, 1991

“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.

Hagerty reported values rising through most of the 2010s, and the market is still deep: original low-mile 1989–91 trucks and Final Editions lead, while fuel-injected and LS-swapped restomods sell for whatever the build cost.
