Jeep Cherokee XJ years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Jeep Cherokee XJ model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
Buy a 4.0. OffroadXtreme recommends the 1991-and-later HO, says 1987–90 Renix trucks suit owners who like diagnosing sensors, and says to avoid 1984–86 (no 4.0). NAXJA members single out non-ABS 1998–99 trucks with the 4.0, AW4, NP231 and 29-spline 8.25 as about the most solid combination. The 2000–01 trucks are good if the head has been checked or replaced.

Jeep Cherokee XJ year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 1984 | Beware | Launch: unibody 'Uniframe', Quadra-Link coil front and leaf rear on live axles; 2.5 L AMC four or 2.8 L GM V6; NP207 Command-Trac or NP228/229 Selec-Trac. 1,200 lb lighter and 31 in shorter than the SJ Cherokee. No 4.0 until 1987: Off Road Xtreme recommends staying away from 1984–86 trucks |
| 1985 | — | Two-wheel-drive model added mid-year; 2.1 L Renault turbodiesel offered in North America 1985–87 |
| 1987 | — | 4.0 L six (173 hp, Renix injection) replaces the V6; AW4 automatic and NP231/NP242 transfer cases arrive; Chrysler buys AMC. Dana 44 rear with the tow package through 1991 |
| 1989 | — | Late in the year the Aisin AX15 five-speed replaces the Peugeot BA-10/5 behind the 4.0; ABS-equipped trucks appear |
| 1991 | Sweet spot | 4.0 L 'High Output' with Chrysler multi-point injection, 190 hp; Chrysler 8.25 in rear axle available on non-ABS trucks. The HO is the XJ Off Road Xtreme recommends: easier to diagnose than the Renix 4.0, and more power |
| 1996 | — | OBD-II and Chrysler's JTEC engine computer |
| 1997 | — | Facelift: steel liftgate replaces fibreglass, new interior and dash with dual airbags, stiffer unibody and quieter door seals |
| 1999 | — | Revised intake manifold mid-year on the 4.0 to offset smaller exhaust ports on the new head casting |
| 2000 | Beware | Coil-on-plug ignition on the 4.0 (193 hp); NV3550 replaces the AX15; front Dana 30 goes low pinion. New '0331' cylinder head: early castings can crack between cylinders 3 and 4 and put coolant in the oil (Wikipedia). A revised 'TUPY' casting arrived late in 2001, so check the head on any 2000–01 |
| 2001 | — | Final year, 4.0 only; 60th Anniversary edition. Toledo production ends June 2001 |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
