DIY repair · Dodge Ramcharger (1981–1993)

Read TBI fault codes and replace tired sensors (1988–91)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hoursCOST Parts only (DIY)

Symptoms

Rough idle, stalling, hesitation, poor fuel economy or a check-engine light on a throttle-body-injected 318 or 360.

The fix, step by step

  1. On these trucks you can read stored trouble codes without a scan tool.
  2. Turn the key on and off three times, and the check-engine light flashes out the codes.
  3. Look them up in the service manual, then test the sensor the code points to before you buy parts.
  4. RamCharger Central owners say the TBI system is reliable if you replace its sensors at the proper intervals, but a truck that has been neglected for 20 years means a lot of time with a multimeter and the manual.
  5. Check for vacuum leaks first.
