DIY repair · Dodge Ramcharger (1981–1993)

Patch rocker and floor rust

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A weekend per sideCOST Panels plus welding labor

Symptoms

Bubbling paint on the rockers ahead of the rear wheels, soft spots in the front floor under the carpet, water inside, or rust reaching the body-mount crossmembers.

The fix, step by step

  1. Strip the area back to clean metal and find out how far the rot really goes.
  2. Owners warn that it's usually worse than it looks.
  3. Cut out the rotten section, make or buy patch panels and weld them in, then seal, prime and undercoat.
  4. RamCharger Central members note that replacement rocker panels have been available.
  5. If the body-mount crossmembers are rotten, plan to lift the body or replace the mounts at the same time.
