Swivel hub (kingpin) and front wheel bearing rebuild

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A day for both sidesCOST Full swivel kit about A$223; wheel-bearing kit about A$54

Symptoms

Grease and oil weeping from the swivel seals, play at the top and bottom of the wheel, or a rumbling front wheel bearing.

The fix, step by step

  1. The 160 uses kingpin swivel hubs.
  2. A complete rebuild kit for MQ 160s (Basco Wholesale, via Bunnings Marketplace) contains four wheel bearings, four kingpin bearings, two needle-roller bearings, two 65-88-11/16.5 oil seals and a swivel gasket and seal kit.
  3. Jack and support the axle, remove the hub cap or free-wheeling hub (if fitted), the wheel bearings and the stub axle, and draw out the axle shaft.
  4. Unbolt the kingpin caps, keeping each shim pack with its cap, and drop the swivel housing off the kingpin bearings.
  5. Replace the bearings, inner seal and swivel wiper seal, then refit with the original shims.
  6. Set kingpin preload and wheel-bearing preload to your workshop manual, then refill or regrease as the manual specifies.
